GEORGIA’S BIG TAX DECISION:

1.  Property Assessment Cap and Tax Increase Limitation:

  • One of the proposals would cap how much property assessments (the value used to calculate property taxes) can increase each year.
  • This helps limit the rise in property taxes that homeowners face when property values increase.

2. Creation of a State Tax Court:

  • Another proposal seeks to create a Georgia Tax Court, which would replace the existing Georgia Tax Tribunal.
  • The court would handle tax-related cases and consist of a judge and assistant judges, appointed by the governor.

3. Increase in Tax Exemptions for Personal Property:

  • A third proposal would increase the tax exemption for personal property, such as business inventory and farm machinery, raising the exempt amount from $7,500 to $20,000.
  • Motor vehicles, trailers, and mobile homes would not be included in this exemption.
